It's not widely known, but Victor Hugo was a big fan of SQL, as evidenced in an early draft of "A Tale of Two Cities" where he used partitioning:
"... PARTITION BY LIST (PERIOD)
(PARTITION times VALUES ('BEST', 'WORST'),
PARTITION ages VALUES ('WISDOM', 'FOOLISHNESS'),
PARTITION epochs VALUES ('BELIEF', 'INCREDULITY'),
PARTITION seasons VALUES ('LIGHT', DARKNESS),
PARTITION time_of_year ('HOPE'), ('DESPAIR'));"

Fortunately for readers, he opted for a more accessible approach in the final version - but that doesn't mean we can't write data model masterpieces using partitioning! Enjoy a whimsical, literary approach to understanding partitioning, whether splitting characters and events among times of War and Peace, cataloging Fantastic Beasts (and Where to Find Them), or archiving off Histories. Explore different partitioning methods, how indexing fits into the equation, and how partitioning choices impact performance, accessibility, and long-term storage of data.
